Thinking of Visiting Barcelona? An Overview ot the History of Tourism There.

Site of the 1992 Summer Olympic Games, the city of Barcelona is a lesser known but excellent destination for the tourist than some of the more famous Cities of the World. In addition to being a stop for the visitor to Europe or Spain, its location on the Mediterranean coast also makes it a popular destination and departure point for many cruises.

One of the most individual aspects of Barcelona is its homage to hometown architect, Antonio Gaudi (1852-1926). In fact, an appreciation of Gaudi architecture is what brings many visitors to the city.

In the following article, the author, who has business in Barcelona, offers his unique point of view.

History of Tourism in Barcelona
By Gaizka Pujana

Because its people attract tourists, it is frequently written about in books, and its locality often described and romanticized.

The founding of the city began with the occupation of the Romans in the First Century B.C, who imposed walls and as a result, for a long period of time, separated villages from the walled area which is actually a part of the city. As of late, the different Catalonian countries united and pushed forward the rise of Barcelona as a tourist capital.

The Olympic Games in 1992 has had a remarkable effect on the city, and it is because of this sports extravaganza that the city has built its heritage around sports. Because of the successful staging of the Olympic Games as the destination city and host, the government was able to promote Barcelona and made it one of the top destinations for travel whether for business or personal time. Together with this rise in tourist visits, Barcelona decided to have a Hotel Plan, where numerous hotels were built to house tourists from all over the world.

Up to this day, Barcelona has a count of 534 hotels with different hotel star ratings. The hotels are categorized under: bread and breakfast, best value, family, luxury, trendy and vacation rentals (tripadvisor.com). This outstanding boost in hotel availability and performance is a direct signifier that the demands of accommodations have steadily increased over the years.

Because booking and travelling has been made easier through online marketing, more and more tourists find it hassle free to confirm reservations over the internet. This has played a big role towards attaining the Record Year for 2011. Since 2005, visitor counts to Barcelona continued to rise (ehotelier.com) and 2010 saw the double digit increase, leading to outstanding performance in 2011.

Together with the contemporary architecture and a unique immersive experience being offered by the city itself, these factors create an overall package for the tourist to remember Barcelona. And because the result of returns depends on the good experiences of a tourist, so does the marketing spread also through shared experiences and word-of-mouth. The combined efforts of tourism authorities, smart campaigning and the local people and their hospitality in bringing more tourists in Barcelona has strengthened the industry in many ways, long since the biggest sports event took place.

Because there is strength in numbers, so do memorable experiences of the city and its activities have when it comes to a unified effort in accommodating tourists well. Barcelona has proven its abilities as the City of Marvels. And she just might bring in more curious visitors over the years to come.

Do not forget that you can save money on your accommodation by renting apartments in Barcelona cheap or cheap apartments Barcelona.

Restaurant Review: El Paisa - Bedford, Texas

I don't normally eat breakfast at a restaurant, but, as it happens, after having a great breakfast at the Buttermilk Cafe in Arlington, Texas earlier this week, it happened again. My daughter wanted to try out El Paisa, and, since she had an early morning appointment and needed me to drive her, I agreed to try it out with her and my grandson...age 3. His comments will not be included in this report.

I had driven past El Paisa, a dine-in mexican fast-food restaurant, on Harwood Road in Bedford, many times and usually made a mental note to eat there sometime. No real reason, just had an air about it.

The first thing I noticed was how clean and neat the outside was.

Once inside, the lady at the register was very friendly, helpful, and, as my daughter put it on UrbanSpoon, "sweet". She was also very patient as my daughter is visually impaired, my grandson is...ahem...active, and I had no clue what I wanted...and have been without my ADHD meds for several days!

Eventually, my daughter decided to get one of the breakfast plates. She got a breakfast "torta" for her son, and I got a breakfast burrito with egg and bacon, and a cup of coffee.

Seated and looking around, the inside was not new, but still very clean and attractive in a simple, mexican motif manner. The bathroom was good sized and also clean, by the way. There was fairly quiet Hispanic music playing in the background of the restaurant, lighting was good but not intense, and the overall ambiance was comfortable.

El Paisa Dining Area

The food was prepared in what appeared to be a clean kitchen. I have been a restaurant manager and try to look at such things.

One word for servings at El Paisa is "big". The breakfast plate was big, my grandson's breakfast torta was big, as was my burrito. I could have played football with it! They put three eggs in almost everything, by the way.

El Paisa Breakfast Torta

Even the coffee, which was good, by the way, was in a big cup, and the lady offered me a refill for free.

The food was delicious, and my daughter, who knows these things, informed me it was "Mexican" not "Tex-Mex". Having had most of my Mexican food experiences in Texas, I noticed that the food at El Pais in Bedford, TX, reminded me of what I got in Mexican restaurants in California. A bit lighter but still flavorful. Sometimes the food in "Mexican" restaurants, even the ones I really like, overwhelms me. This was good, simple fare and I completely enjoyed the experience.

I will be taking my wife there for a meal in the near future. If you like Mexican food, you might want to visit El Pais in Bedford, Texas.

Restaurant Review: Buttermilk Cafe - Artlington, Texas

When you travel you eat, and, since you often eat at restaurants which you know nothing about, I have decided to include the occasional restaurant review on my travel blog.

At the moment, my own abilitiy to travel is curtailed due to some personal and family health issues, but that will change in a few months. As it is, my wife and I don't get out much except for the common errands, and don't eat out a whole lot, and, when we do, it is usually at a few favorite restaurants.

One of these favorites for the last year has been the Buttermilk Cafe on Pipeline Road in Hurst, Texas. A down-home sort of place, which reminded us of another favorite, Lil' Tex, in Copperas Cove, Texas, it was popular with the locals (of which we are now a part), served hearty, if not gourmet, American food, in large portions with good-ol-gal hospitality from the waitresses.

I love having a sweet waitress, young or old, call me "Honey" or "Darlin" (no "g"), or even "Sweetheart", by the way.

Anyway, a family task took us down into Arlington early yesterday morning, and we decided to stop in and have breakfast at the newly opened Buttermilk Cafe in Arlington, Texas, just a hop, skip, and jump South on Collins from Cowboy Stadium.

We were greeted warmly by the waitstaff, and our waitress, Kaylee, made sure we were taken care of, including starting a new pot of coffee for me.

To be honest, when I write about a restaurant, I have to admit that I do not know a whole lot about how food should be prepared...or taste. Oh sure, I can tell when it tastes okay to me, but I spent 21 years in the military, dining happily off messhall food, C-Rations, and MRE's.

So, other than saying the food looked and tasted good, I'm not going to say any more on preparation, appearance, and taste.

Hey! It was the Sampler with eggs, all the meats, grits and toast! Basic breakfast. However, it was hot, it tasted great (to me...Mr. Dead Tastebuds), and it was served quickly by an attentive Kaylee, who also kept my coffee cup filled. Diners at other tables and booths seemed to be getting fast and friendly service as well, by the way.

What more could I ask?

My wife, who does recognize good food, ordered a greek omelet with biscuits and gravy and assures me that everything was excellent, except that the biscuits, which were supposed to be soaked in gravy anyway, were a tiny bit hard for her liking.

The portions were even more than we normally get at the Buttermilk Cafe in Hurst, and, for once, even I could not finish....our dog got a treat.

A few weeks earlier, we had introduced one of our daughters, the gourmand and would-be gourmet cook, not the one who is a parole officer, to the Buttermilk Cafe in Hurst, and she is hooked. We intend to introduce both of them to the Buttermilk Cafe in Arlington.

We do heartily recommend the Buttemilk Cafe in Arlington (817-459-4477), at 404 North Collins St., Arlington, Texas 76011. They serve a basic American menu, have daily specials, and don't hold back on the portions. The food tastes good and the service is excellent.

Visitors to the Arlington, Texas area may want to know that the Buttermilk Care in Arlington is convenient to Six Flags, Cowboy Stadium, and the Texas Ranger's Ballpark. While Six Flags would be a bit of a stretch, a healthy fan could easily walk from the restaurant to a football or baseball game. Although located slight away from "the action" there are many other good restaurants, quality motels, and plenty of shopping of all kinds within a mile or so. To reach I-30, just head north on Collins for a mile or so. Go east on I-30 and south on Highway 360 to get down to I-20.

You "can" reach I-20 by going south on Collins, but you go through a lot of stoplights and neighborhoods.

If this comment entices you to go there, please let them know where you saw this review.

Going Where They Don't Speak English? Learn the Language.

I lived in Europe for six years. It wasn't my idea, but Uncle Sam said to do it, so I did....and loved it!

One of the things that made it so great was that before I got stationed to Germany, the army sent me to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California to learn German.

I remember two American sitting in a train in Munich, complaining loudly about their visit to Germany because nobody spoke English. Actually, a great many people in Germany, and other European contries, DO speak English, but, often they will not try because of the poor manners and attitudes of many visitors to their country.

On the other hand, I cannot count the number of times that people began smiling and chatting when I revealed that I spoke THEIR language! My ability to speak, read, and write German not only allowed me to enjoy my stay in Germany so much more, but helped me feel almost as if I was in my native land.

If you are going to visit a foreign land, try at least to learn the language, or at least a few key phrases.
=======================

Top 5 Reasons to Learn a Foreign Language Abroad
By Marie Von Schlieben

"I speak English, so I don't have to learn a foreign language..."

If you have thought this more than twice then...welcome! You found the right article to read!

You share your language with approximately 480 million other people around the world. Still, this is just 7 percent of the world's population! There are 6,999 remaining languages after linguists that you've ignored so far. It will take time and effort to learn one of these foreign languages, but it will definitely be worth it as it will have a positive effect on your personal, social and even professional development. Even if English is not your mother tongue, you're still welcome as you will have even greater benefits by learning a second foreign language.

Begin to learn Spanish in less than 5 minutes

First of all, you probably already have an idea in mind where you would like to go and which language you would like to study. This is great! But then there's this feeling that you aren't 100% convinced yet because you don't know what to tell your parents and your friends and sometimes you even need to convince yourself. Don't worry that's normal, it's called your weaker self and I have it as well. So here comes the ultimate list to convince you to have a serious talk with the lazy person living inside of you:

1.) Experience a new culture by fully immersing yourself

By choosing to learn Spanish for example in Latin America instead of doing a course in your hometown you've already made the right choice regarding two important points. First, you will learn the language a lot faster in the country where it's spoken because you are constantly surrounded by it. Secondly, you will experience cultural differences such as traditions, foods and special customs by living in this place. Even though it is for a short time period you adapt to the daily life which allows you to get a more distinct point of view.

2.) Travel and see new places

Once you get out of your comfort zone you get excited, nervous sometimes even a bit scared and this is exactly what makes you develop personally. Only if we leave our comfort zone from time to time are we able to learn and develop. A new place, people you don't know and things you are not used to, will help you to broad your horizons. Without even mentioning all these beautiful places that you will discover on day or weekend trips during your stay abroad.

3.) Make new friends

When you arrive at the language school you chose to study at, there will be a bunch of other people from all over the world that are there for the exact same reason as you are. They all left their home countries in order to experience something new so it is super easy to get to know them. Staying in your hometown would mean that you would completely miss the opportunity to meet these people from all over the world.

4.) Gain a useful skill

Yes, it's true. Today every boss will tell you that it is important to speak a foreign language. Why? Because we live in a globalized world. If you want to make yourself more competitive in the labour market, language skills always help and open doors to job opportunities world-wide. Furthermore, leaving your home country and going abroad is a challenge in many ways. You will not only come back having learnt a foreign language but you will have also trained your memory, increased your self-discipline and have gained more confidence by interacting with others.

5.) Support the local community

The prices for language courses abroad are usually lower than taking classes in your home country and by studying abroad you help the local economy to grow. The school pays the taxes and the salaries of the local teachers and organizes day trips with local guides as well as offers family stays or other kinds of accommodation. This provides an added income for these families so even your stay even has a positive impact on others. With this tourist driven financial support many communities ensure their economic stability.

Whenever or wherever you want to go abroad, learning a foreign language will help you in many ways. If you want to travel a country it enables you to get in touch with the locals, if you want to read foreign literature in its original version it allows you to understand the linguistic niceties of the native language of the author (same thing for movies).

Sharing fun moments with the other students, seeing new places and getting out of your daily routine is a great and a unique experience that you should not miss out on!

Aside from Spanish courses in Spain and Latin America, do you know other places that are popular to learn a foreign language? What are the benefits that you consider when going to study abroad?

Marie von Schlieben is currently living in Spain and knows a lot about Language Travel, more of her articles can be found at her Blog about Spanish & Latin American culture and history.

Go to Italy and Visit Rome, Florence, Tuscany, and Lake Como

Italy is a great place to visit. It has so much to see and do. From great antiquities, major metropolitan areas, beautiful countryside, mountains, and...Lake Como.

If you enjoy walking, Europe is a great place to visit, and the cities and countryside of Italy is some of the best walking terrain in the world. However, if walking in big cities, like Rome, doesn't seem to be relaxing, take a trip north to Lake Como...and don't tell my wife. George Clooney has a home there, and she would give major portions of her anatomy to go there and see him!
=====================

Top Reasons to Walk in Lake Como
By Dipika Patel

If you're planning a walking holiday in Italy, consider basing yourself in Lake Como. This fabulous destination, situated in the Lombardy region, boasts some immensely rewarding trails and incredible towns to explore. So, what are the top reasons to come here?

Rewarding routes

One of the chief reasons for choosing Lake Como for your independent walking holiday is the fantastically rewarding routes it is home to. Many of the trails here pose a little bit of a challenge, giving you the chance to stretch yourself and discover some incredible views that a lot of visitors would otherwise miss.

However, you need not worry that the paths will be excessively hard. While demanding, they will not exhaust you - and they will be all the more satisfying for your efforts.

Little-known paths

Another charming thing about a luxury activity holiday here is that you'll discover a mixture of little-known and historical paths. Indeed, the trails include pilgrimage routes and smugglers' pathways, with their rich past making your walks all the more exciting.

Among the historical trails you'll follow is a pilgrims' trail in Lenno. This uphill route is littered with twists and turns and sprinkled with chapels, before you reach the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Santuario Soccorso. Next, you'll walk along a mountain route dating back to the 12th century to get to the wonderfully isolated Abbey of San Benedetto. Nestled high above a valley, it's the ideal scenic spot for a picnic.

Visiting Varenna will take you along another historical route. This pilgrimage trail leads uphill to the spectacular Varenna Castle. In addition to being visually striking, this fortification offers splendid views over the surroundings. Leaving here, you can follow the path along the eastern shore to where it meets the lake at Bellamo, before visiting the 'orrido' - a vast gorge that slices the town in two.

Pretty cities, towns and villages

It is not only historical walks you have to look forward to; Lake Como also plays host to some immensely attractive cities, towns and villages. Among them is Como, which is home to a fascinating old city you can explore prior to embarking on a walk high above it.

Bellagio, meanwhile, is celebrated for its picturesque promenade and the charming villages it is home to, which are nestled in the hills. These are well worth seeking out, as they boast little farms that sell excellent locally-made produce, including honey and cheeses.

After visiting Bellagio, you can spend some time in Pescallo, which is well known for its fabulous waterfront restaurants and winding streets.

Mountain views

Another attractive thing about Lake Como is its marvellous alpine views. During a walking break here, you can embark on some excellent mountain routes, discovering unforgettable vistas that many tourists miss out on.

Perhaps one of the most breathtaking is the trail up Monte San Primo. You'll transfer up to a height of 1,000 m before walking to a saddle at 1,400 m. Staggering 270 degree views will greet you upon your arrival, while the 2,400 m La Grigne towers above you. You'll have an amazing experience on the return leg too, by visiting a cliff-side bar in the village of Ghisallo, situated around 750 m below the saddle.

In Como, you can take the funicular - a near-vertical journey that's bound to thrill you - up to Brunate, which is situated 700 m above the town. You can see all the way to Milan from this vantage point, making it an unforgettable highlight of your trip.

Going to Travel Back Down Home to Florida's Gulf Coast

couldn't pass up the following article.

Although I live in the Dallas - Fort Worth, Texas area, I grew up walking barefoot on the edge of Pensacola Bay. I can remember when there was no bridge between Santa Rosa Island and Navarre Beach. In those days, the only way onto "the island" was the toll bridge over "the sound" at Pensacola Beach.

It's a great area, and hopefully, I'll be back there in a few months for a visit. At worst, my 50th high school reunion, Pensacola Catholic High '63, will be next year and I will definitely be there then.

Traveler's Review - Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines

There are a lot of reasons why people are hesitant to go on a cruise.

Sometimes it's the cost, sometimes the time. Sometimes, it's just the lack of knowledge about what all that money and time is going to go for.

We all worry a little bit when we are uncertain about what something new is going to be like. Going on a cruise is no different.

So, it is a good idea to find out how someone who has "been there, done that" feels about it. In the following article, the author, who was new to cruises, tells us in his own words what he liked and disliked about being on a Royal Caribbean cruise for the first time.
=====================

Royal Caribbean Cruise Review
By Chris Cheyne

This summer I was able to take my family of four on a seven day cruise.

This was our first cruise. We chose Royal Caribbean on the recommendation of family members who are big cruisers. We have two children, one eleven and one nine.

Not having any experience cruising, I really didn't have any pre-conceived notions so I'm wasn't too picky about the cruise. We were on the Freedom of the Seas ship which is the second largest class of ship Royal has.

Being a very independent person, I had a bit of a hard time the first day since you basically give up your freedom and are "stuck" on the ship. This quickly passed as there are almost endless things to discover and do. It was also incredibly easy to relax, which I don't get nearly enough of at home. I experienced no sea sickness as there is just the slightest bit of movement and sometimes vibration that you can feel on this massive ship. We did, however, have near perfect weather which always helps.

I loved the pool areas as did my kids.

They loved having "kid" hot tubs, a small lazy river, buckets dumping water, and the other normal pool stuff. Soft serve complementary ice cream around the pool area is almost always present which they quickly discovered. This ship has plenty of deck chairs around the pool so it is easy to stake your claim even during the busy times. They also have an older kid pool area toward the middle of the ship which shows movies on the giant screen poolside. There are also plenty of staff-run activities, such as belly flop contests and line dancing, which are just as fun to watch as to participate in.

There is even an adult pool area on up toward the front of the ship. When I say adult, I just mean that kids are discouraged from visiting, not that clothing is optional. It's just more relaxed with a bar and more hot tubs which hang over the side of the ship. I really wish that I had discovered the rock wall and the Flowrider earlier into my trip. These two things are incredibly fun especially for the kids.

The food in the formal dining area was a huge treat.

I was greatly pleased to find out that formal attire is only suggested but not required. Many people don't wear coats and ties to dinner, which is just fine by me while on vacation. Of course, plenty of people do dress up and nobody frowns on those who don't which was great. How great it was to have a world class waitstaff who, by the second meal, already know your preferences and are quick to please. On lobster night our waiter brought my brother-in-law and me a second helping of lobster without us asking as he knew we would probably be too shy to ask for more.

Obviously I had a great time but here are my few complaints.

If you like to drink soft drinks you may be out of luck. There are just a few selected kinds available on the ship. You may be without your favorite until you get to the next stop. Also, with 2 kids, I should have paid a little extra for a bigger room or even a room with a view. I talked to some folks who said, "save your money, you're not in your room that much anyway", but It was very tight having the smallest interior rooms.

That's really my only gripe, but I guess you can't have everything.

If you choose to go on a Royal Caribbean cruise, it's a good idea to join the Crown and Anchor society, which is completely free. This allows you to get more, and more free amenities, the more you cruise. My father-in-law is at the next-to-highest level and we were able to go through a special, shorter "VIP" line at boarding and get on before the crowd. This is like frequent flyer rewards but much more effective especially as you get quiet a few cruise nights under your belt. Well worth signing up for.

Want to See the Cities of the World? Do You Have Your Passport Yet?

Despite all the changes in the world, one aspect of travel has not changed for many decades...you will probably need a passport. If you want, or expect, to travel, you should have your passport already. However, if you do not, here's some tips on where and how to get one.......
====================

Where to Apply for a Passport in the United States?
By Al Anthony Gablinez

A US passport is the most important document that is required if you want to make frequent international trips. The first and the most important thing that you should do as soon as you become a US citizen is to apply for passport. This is because only US citizens have the privilege of holding US passports.

All you need to do is complete the passport application, attach all the needed documentation for proof and submit it at the any Passport Acceptance Facility. You have the choice of getting your passport through routine or expedited service based on your travel plans.

Apply for passport in an easy way

Information regarding as to where to apply for passport is provided by the US Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs, Office of Passport Services/Customer Service. This has designated many post offices, clerks of court, public libraries and other state, county, township, and municipal government offices with the authority to receive passport applications on its own behalf. Since there are many Passport Acceptance facilities in the US, you need to find the one that is nearest to your place of residence. Just follow these steps and you will be able find out the nearest location within a short time. 1. Log on to the US Department of State's Passport Acceptance Facility Search Page, 2, Search using your zip code, state or city, 3 once you enter your search option, you will be directed to a page that has a list of all the facilities that are in your area along with details like whether it accessible for handicapped people, it has photo on-site or nearby, you can select the one that is nearest you by clicking on that specific facility's name.

For Expedited requirements

In case you have to travel within a short notice, say, within 14 days you need a passport to get a foreign visa; then you are eligible to make an appointment with any Passport Agency and request an expedited service. You may be required to furnish proof of your travel along with the itinerary at some passport agencies. The following Regional Passport Agencies do not require you to provide them with your travel plans when you apply for passport - Arkansas, Buffalo, Colorado, Detroit, El Paso, Honolulu, Minneapolis, San Diego, Seattle and Vermont.

For Emergencies

For life threatening situations or life/death emergencies that require you to travel immediately, a special service called the Will call service can be used.

The above mentioned details are applicable only if you are planning to apply for passport when you are in the US. In case you are outside the US, you need to go to the respective US Embassy or Consulate and act according to their instructions. This is because the process may vary from Embassy to Embassy. Now that you have found out the nearest location to apply for passport, completing the application process is the next step.

Passport Day of 2012 in the US

March 10, 2012 has been marked as the Passport Day in the US for this year. You may wonder as to what is so special about this day. You can apply for passport without having made a prior appointment. Just go to a Regional Passport Agency in the US on this day, which falls on a Saturday, and file in your application. You can opt for the standard routine service or go for the expedited processing on this day. So if you are still without a US passport, this is your day!

Restarurant Reviews - 5 Odd and Interesting Places to Eat in London

In today's travel climate, one of the easiest things to do is find a cookie-cutter, name brand restaurant. It is also fairly simple to find a good place to eat. Just ask some locals.

While not necessarily a problem, the locals are likely to give you the names of some good, but relatively tame, eateries!

If you want to "spice things up", so to speak, you have to do a little more research on your target city. Since so many people are going to be heading to London this year, I thought the following article on five out-of-the-ordinary restaurants in London would be of interest to some readers.
=====================

Top Five Unusual Restaurants in London
By Emily Heart

If you've visited your local Chinese, Indian, gastropub and chippie more times than you care to remember, you might be hankering after something a little different. Our guide to the top five unusual restaurants in London will offer a new horizon for your senses.

Bunga Bunga - Battersea

This tongue-in-cheek Italian bar, pizzeria and karaoke joint is named after the term Silvio Berlusconi used to describe the naughty shenanigans which went on at his house. The interior references some of the greatest Italian icons through the centuries, all with an eccentric and comical twist, and is part of what makes Bunga Bunga one of the most unusual restaurants in London.

For example, their 'Sistine Stairway' features a painstaking reproduction of Michelangelo's Sistine chapel, while the bar is shaped like a gondola with Venice canals painted on the wall behind it. Their pizzeria serves authentic Italian dishes and beyond the eating area you'll find two private rooms, dedicated to karaoke parties.

Meat Liquor - Marylebone

Offering possibly the best spicy burgers available in the Capital, and at a good price, it's no wonder this unusual restaurant in London has a cult following. This Marylebone restaurant's humble origins only serve to add to its charm.

Founder Yianni Papoutis was cooking his Philly cheesesteaks and crispy bacon burgers from a van he called the 'Meatwagon' just over a year ago. Today the queues outside Meat Liquor could reasonably join those few earthly entities visible from the moon. And it's worth the wait.

Funky Asia - Spitalfields

This fun and highly unusual Pan Asian restaurant in London's Spitalfields has an eclectic menu, formulated by ex-Nobu chef Danh Huu Bui. Dishes seem to have arrived from a number of Southeast Asian locations, with Japanese-style gyoza, Thai chicken, Vietnamese honey soy cucumber salad and Korean-style lamb chops all making an appearance.

Turn up and enjoy a delicious, laid-back meal in an exciting space - the wild interior features brightly coloured lights, Chesterfields and steel cladding, helping to make it one of the most unusual restaurants in London.

Burger & Lobster - Mayfair

Gaining a reputation as one of the cleverest menu systems around, Burger and Lobster soothes the information overload of today's society by offering only two choices: burger, or lobster, making it fourth on our list of unusual restaurants in London. Each is 20, and then you can indulge in either chocolate or lime mousse.

The brilliance of only allowing these two options is that they have been able to fine-tune their preparation and consequently do them both extremely well. Burgers are generous and come with salad and chips, while a lobster will be chosen from the tanks which reside underneath the restaurant, and also served with salad and chips. There is even a viewing gallery if you'd like to see these creatures enjoy their free time before hitting the plate.

Archipelago - Fitzrovia

Located in a side street sandwiched between bustling Tottenham Court Road and charming Charlotte Street, Archipelago is an exotic, mysterious place where you can leave the City's perpetual hum behind you and enter a place where time stands still.

With a menu that includes crocodile (don't be tempted to ask them to 'make it snappy') and wildebeest for mains and scorpions for dessert, you will know to expect the unexpected from the moment you step foot inside this most unusual restaurant in London.

The Nudge is a witty and irreverent guide to the Capital, including updates on the best unusual restaurants in London.

Have You Considered a Caribbean Cruise Recently?

One of the most popular destinations for a cruise is the Caribbean Sea. After all, so many cruise lines, such as Carnival and Disney, sail to so many interesting and entertaining ports.

And the costs are so low? You can get a great 5-day Caribbean cruise from Galveston, for example, for less than $400.

In fact, the price is so great and there are so many destination, that for many, that's a problem in itself!

In the following article, the author comments on four good Caribbean cruise destinations.

Cruise Ship Secrets - Save Money on Your Next Cruise

==================
Planning Caribbean Cruises: 4 Destinations For A Trip Of A Lifetime
By Sandra Meredith

Caribbean cruises conjure up feelings of relaxation. After all, who wouldn't love to relax on a beautiful cruise ship, overlooking some of the clearest, bluest water in the world? Whether you've enjoyed taking a cruise in the past, or you're planning your first one, there are a number of popular places to enjoy a day off the ship.

Before you board however, check to see if you need a passport. In many cases, a visa isn't necessary, but this might vary by your cruise destination. Although being stuck on a luxurious ship wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, it's a good idea to make sure you're able to get out and enjoy the local culture.

Caribbean Cruises to Aruba

Whether you're interested in shopping, relaxing on the beach or taking part in outdoor activities like windsurfing, snorkeling, diving or fishing, a vacation in Aruba can be one that you'll remember for the rest of your life. The south coast of Aruba is a coral reef with more than 20 different dive sites and 11 wreckage sites, which makes it perfect for active vacationers.

Aruba also has a number of attractions, which makes it an ideal place for a day off a cruise ship. Natural wonders are everywhere throughout Arikok National Park, Casibari and Ayo rock formations and the Indian caves. If you prefer historic sites, consider visiting the Bushiribana gold mine or Alto Vista Chapel. If you're visiting with children, they'll enjoy visiting the Butterfly Farm, the Donkey Sanctuary and the Ostrich Farm.

Caribbean Cruises to The Bahamas

With 700 islands and some of the clearest water in the world, a Bahamian cruise offers visitors a wide variety of vacation options. If you're planning a Bahamian cruise, you'll need to first decide which of the many ports you want to sail into. Visitors can choose from Nassau and Paradise Island, Grand Bahama Island, Great Stirrup Cay, Castaway Cay, Half Moon Cay, Princess Cays and Coco Cay. Each of the different islands offer different amenities and options, but visitors are guaranteed to find miles upon miles of white sandy beaches.

Caribbean Cruises to Jamaica

Jamaica is one of the most famous cruise destinations. Visitors can choose from a number of different ports, but some of the most famous are Falmouth, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Port Antonio. While each port boasts its own unique cities and activities, Falmouth was recently named as the Port of the Year for 2011. Visitors to Falmouth can explore a local craft market at the Albert George Shopping and Historical Centre or visit the rum museum. Falmouth is a fairly new port, but it's one that steeped in history.

Caribbean Cruises to The Cayman Islands

With so many different ports, cruises in the Cayman Islands are other popular options. The main island, Grand Cayman, offers four different cruise ports. George Town offers plenty of historic sites for visitors, including the Public Library, Elmslie Memorial Church, the National Museum, the Town Clock and more. Areas on the eastern part of the island are less crowded and visitors can see the more natural parts of the island, such as the Mastic Reserve and Trail, the Wreck of the Ten Sails and the Blue Iguana Recovery Programme.

These are only some of the places cruises can take visitors. Many people research cruise destinations for months before boarding one of the ships, so if these destinations aren't for you, there are a number of others to choose from. Caribbean cruises from MSC Cruises provide visitors with some of the most modern ships in the industry. MSC Cruises Caribbean cruises can take vacationers to The Bahamas, Jamaica, Barbados and more. Travel Tips for Seniors

I am a senior (67) who loves to travel. I also am into physical fitness and have a senior health and fitness blog.

When I came across the following article, I was undecided whether to put it on my senior health and fitness blog, as having an active, fun-filled lifestyle is important to health...senior or otherwise, or put it on my travel blog.

I opted for the travel blog, i.e. here :).

Good article. I hope you enjoy it.

Senior Travel Adventures
By Bronwyn White

Retirement is a time many people look forward to. They often view it as a time of release from the hassles of work, and the demands and responsibilities of family. As a result, it is often seen as a time when they can explore some of the pursuits they never found time to engage in, as well as visit some of the places they have always desired to see. For this reason, many consider retirement as the ideal time to start senior travels, opting either to go on a cruise or travel by plane and start the senior travel adventures they have always dreamed about.

There are many benefits that can be derived from taking that step, and traveling to the places you've always wanted to see.

It is a great way to relax and enjoy some down time. For many seniors, years of job and family have created such an enormous level of stress that they are looking forwarding to 'changing gears' and enjoying retirement. For some, a cruise to an exotic location in the Mediterranean, or the idyllic shores of the Caribbean, is their idea of a relaxing interval. Whichever destination you choose, the time away will reinvigorate your spirit, mind and body, and leave you feeling more alive than ever.

It can make you feel young again. Go for the adventure and the fun. Do something you have never done before like taking a ride in a hot air balloon, you can get a wonderful view from up there, and who knows, it might just be what you need to get a new perspective on life. Visit Disney World. In your senior travels you can view it through different lenses, which allow you to simply enjoy all that the theme parks have to offer. Just think of all the thrills and spills to look forward to.

It is a great way to meet new people. Broaden your horizons and get another dimension going in your life. When you meet new friends with whom you can share a different set of life experiences, it can help you to develop and grow. Who knows, it might open up a whole new world of friendships.

It is the perfect opportunity to visit historical landmarks. This can be such an exhilarating and stimulating experience. There is much to be gained by learning about centuries old monuments and cities, like the ruins of ancient Rome. New facts about people and places can help to create a sense of expectation and deep appreciation for all that has gone on before.

It can create new interests. As you visit new cities and learn about the culture, it can spark new hobbies and interests. A visit to an art gallery for example might unearth a latent talent you have held to sketch or paint and might therefore be the beginning of new areas of creativity.

If you are a senior, the benefits of travelling are immense, and one thing is for sure. At the end of it all you will feel fulfilled and happy. Just being able to leave behind the normal pursuits of everyday life, can give you a fresh infusion of purpose, and leave you feeling inspired.

What do You Need to Take When You Travel?

When you travel, you have to do a lot of planning. Of course, you have to plan what clothes to take and things like that, but there are a lot of other things which can be important to take when you travel overseas.

In the following article, the author reminds us of some of the things that may be important to take when travelling internationally.
=====================

Checklist for Traveling Abroad
By Jennifer Untermeyer

International travel is both fun and exciting but it can easily become stressful if you forget or lose important documents. This checklist will help ensure that you have everything you need for a smooth journey.

1. At least $100 worth of local currency - calculate the cab fare from the airport to your destination and carry more than that amount with you. Some change is nice to have in the airport for luggage carts and tipping. Remember to bring some home country money as well, just in case you need it on the trip home.

2. Passports. Be sure to check expiration dates well in advance. It pays to check the destination country regulations as some countries require the passport to be valid for one month or more after the trip dates. Check and double check that you include all necessary visas with your passport information.

3. At least one copy of every passport packed separately from other travel documents. Consider including copies in a checked bag and then storing them in the hotel safe at your destination.

4. Health insurance cards. Verify that your health insurance is valid in your destination country and be sure to carry the cards - just in case.

5. Hard copy of important phone numbers (doctors, relatives, US Consulate, etc). Everyone has this information in cell phones these days but what if you lose your phone, forget the charger or it stops working?

6. Shot records (required for some countries)/birth certificates. Some countries require proof of immunization and/or proof of parentage before entering the country.

7. Notarized health authorization (if traveling with grandchildren). This doesn't need to be complex - just a statement naming the adults traveling with your children and giving them authorization to approve health care in an emergency (just like most schools require).

8. Notarized travel permission or custody papers if both parents are not traveling. It is common for passport control to request this information if a parent is traveling alone with a child. A copy of the child's birth certificate should also be carried if both parents are not traveling.

9. Hard copy of itinerary and lodging phone numbers. Better to be safe than sorry!

10. Leave behind - copy of itinerary, passport copy and contact numbers with neighbor or relative.

Complete this checklist and you should have everything you need for a fun and exciting international adventure.

Tuscany, Quiet Jewel of Italy

When people think about a trip to Italy, they often have certain famous cities of the world spring to mind...Venice, Florence, Rome, Pisa, to name a few. However, many are not aware that there is a region of Italy known for many things, including being the heart of the Italian Renaissance. Some of its famous personages include Leonardo DaVinci, Michaelangelo, and the Medici.

Tuscany is also known for (real) landscapes that look like they should have been painted by an artist and many excellent Toscana (wine) vintages.

As you may imagine, however, being located where it is, within one of the most historical lands in the world, and in position feel and affect the ebb and flow of history in the rest of Europe, there are many historically important and interesting sites to visit in Tuscany, as the author points out in the following article.
Sightseeing, Tours, Attractions and Things to do in Florence

Tuscany's World Heritage Sites
By Giovanni Balboni

There are many great reasons to visit Tuscany: villas in prime locations, fine wine, stunning landscape and breath-taking architecture, all of which contribute to creating one of the most beloved and iconic regions not just in Italy, but in the whole of Europe. The natural beauty of the region has no doubt played a role in nurturing artists and writers who have single-handedly changed the course of European culture from the middle ages onwards. This natural and creative atmosphere provides a romance that many potential visitors find incredibly seductive - it's no surprise that many people return again and again to Tuscany. Villas are available across the region, giving you easy access to all parts of it. Here is a brief rundown of the UNESCO recognised World Heritage Sites in the area:

The Historic Centre of Florence

Known for administrative purposes as quartiere 1 in the centre of Florence, the historic centre is home to many world-famous landmarks, including the Bascilica di Santa Maria del Fiore and the associates Piazza del Duomo, the Piazzale degli Uffizi, and Giotto's Bell Tower. If you've never been before, this should be one of the first sights on your itinerary for Tuscany. Villas occupy many of the hills around the city, and with a hire car or public transport, Florence is easy to access.

The Historic Centre of Siena

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, the centre of Siena is one of Italy's most popular tourist attractions. The imposing Cathedral is one of the finest examples of Italian Romanesque-Gothic architecture and was built on an unusual axis, running from north to south.

Piazza del Duomo, Pisa

Another of the most romantic sights in Tuscany, villas in the northwest of the region will give you the perfect opportunity to visit the historic central square in Pisa. Although it's one of the first things you'll see, Pisa is more than just a leaning tower: the Camposanto Monumentale and the Santa Maria della Spina are also popular tourist attractions.

The Historic Centre of San Gimignano

San Gimignano is a small walled hill town famous for its impressive medieval towers that can be seen from several kilometres away. The 14 towers of varying heights have managed to survive the centuries of war and destruction that eradicated them from other cities such as Bologna and Florence.

The Historic Centre of the City of Pienza and Val d'Orcia

Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites for the price of one: the delightful historic town of Pienza and the bucolic beauty of the rolling hills in the Val d'Orcia. The main sights include the Palazzo Piccolomini and the Duomo in the centre of Pienza.

When Visiting Cities of the World You Will Have to Exchange Money

If you have never traveled widely, then you have never had the pleasure, and I am being facetious here, of having to exchange your dollars, or home currency, for that of the land you are visiting.

As someone who has lived in Europe for six years, let me asssure you that it can be quite an experience.

In the article below, the author discusses the exchange of Dollars for Euros.
========================

Tips And Advice On How To Exchange USD For EUR
By John Lebowski

Are you planning to exchange USD (US dollars) for EUR (Euros)? Exchanging foreign currencies can be a headache at times and therefore by keeping the simple and easy-to-follow tips mentioned in this article in mind, you'll be able to exchange foreign currencies easily and without hassles in the future! The first tip in this regard would be to make comparisons before you fix in on a dealer from whom you'll be exchanging your US dollars for Euros. To do this, find out the exchange rates from different Forex dealers and then make comparisons to see which one is offering the lowest USD Euro exchange rate (if you are buying) and the highest rate (if you are selling).

Alternatively, you can also go for online FOREX dealers. There are some very good ones online which would offer the best rates. So it is advisable to do some research and see for yourself which one would be apt. These days, travel agents have also started offering Forex services as an add-on service to their main service, offering tickets to passengers because it makes sense and it is more convenient for the passengers to purchase foreign currency from the same place where they are purchasing their tickets. So, if you want to draw comparisons then you can also take the rates offered by local travel agents into account.

If the motive behind you wanting to exchange dollars for Euros is because you are traveling then you should not exchange directly from the airport before departure or after arrival since the rates at the airport generally tend to be higher than the rates offered by other dealers. Therefore, always purchase or exchange foreign currencies in advance before you board your flight because you will benefit more by doing this. Of course you don't necessarily have to exchange the entire amount that you need, you can exchange a majority of it from other dealers and in case you still require more foreign currency then you can always do it from the airport. It is more convenient this way and you don't have to worry about carrying so much cash with you!

When exchanging foreign currencies, start the process of watching the USD Euro exchange rate for reasonable rates early because the rates fluctuate daily. You'll just have to wait for the day when the rates seem reasonable and then you can immediately go for the exchange! http://postofficeexchangerate.com

Henry Rustkirk used to sell tickets for the airlines.

Knowing When to Buy Your Next Airline Ticket Can Save You Money

When preparing to travel overseas, people give thought to a lot of issues, especially if they want to save money. Learning to travel on a budget can help the vacationing tourist or the business traveler. After all, more money for the tourist means more money and time to use for whatever they wish...perhaps even a longer stay, or another sight to see, or the chance to spend time in a better hotel...or just gamble in a casino.

The business traveler always wants to save money, so, getting a good deal on accomodations, meals, or airline tickets can be of great importance to the executive trying to close a hot deal in Rome or the gambler wanting to drop a few bucks in Las Vegas.

In the following article, the author, who works in Italy, explains what she has learned about how to get a good deal on airline tickets.
==============
When To Buy Your International Plane Tickets
By Erin Catucci

Timing is everything! Knowing a few simple tricks to help you book your plane tickets at the right time can save you $500 or more per ticket on an international flight. The best time to buy international plane tickets is 4-5 months in advance as opposed to domestic tickets, which is usually 2-3 months in advance. Airlines typically lower the price for international flights around the five month mark and the prices will slowly start going up around three months before. Even then you can still find deals so don't discourage if you're planning last minute.

From personal experience, my husband and I bought tickets to Italy in May three years in a row. The first year we were only able to plan a month in advance. The price: $1200 each. The second year we were able to book two months in advance at a cost of $950 each. We booked our last trip five months before and the price: $700 each. The destination, the airline, and the time of year was always the same. The only variation was how far in advance we were able to book.

When you start planning your trip, scout tickets for at least a couple of weeks and look at what days and times you find the lowest prices. Usually the best deals are found on a Monday or Tuesday because the airlines issue their sales on Monday morning. By Tuesday afternoon all they're all competing to have the best deals but the prices will start creeping back up again after that. Usually the weekend prices are the highest as airlines know this is when most people have the time to make travel reservations. Check multiple sites like Orbitz and Expedia to find out which one offers the best deals for your airlines and airport and don't forget the airline's direct website or even your bank's or credit card rewards booking system. None of these rules are written in stone however so it is very important to scout out the pricing trends for your specific airlines and airports to avoid missing out on the best deals.

Once you've determined where and when to buy your ticket, check back at your target time. When you see the prices have dropped, purchase! After the major discount at the 4-5 month mark for international tickets or the 2-3 month for domestic, they will not likely drop again and there will only be a limited supply. Once those tickets are gone, the prices will start to rise again so don't wait. If you've done your research ahead of time, you'll know what's a good deal for your destination and you can buy with confidence. The other perk is that when you buy earlier you have a better chance of purchasing an affordable direct flight, or at least one with manageable layovers.

Knowing these tricks and spending a few extra minutes scouting your plane tickets can save you a lot of money which you can put towards something extra special for your trip.

Vacation Travel Tip - Skip the Hotel and Rent an Apartment or House

My wife and I are going to Italy next year, so we've been doing some planning. I have lived in Europe before, but Uncle Sam was MY landlord at the time. I occasionally stayed "on the economy" but generally in a hotel (there was a great one run by the Salvation Army in London in the 80's) and the friendly neighborhood gasthaus.

However, those things were expensive, although they worked well for a short vacation.

This time, my wife and I hope to stay in Europe for a month or more, and the hotel bill for that could be astronomical!

There's three basic ways around that: stay in the cheapest dump you can find or find a friend who lives there and bunk in with them.

Another good way is to rent an apartment or home for a short term. Not only do you get the accomodations, but you can prepare your own meals...anouther money saver. You also get to have neighbors and go to the local shops over a period of time and actually get to know the country.

Here's a nice little article on doing a vacation rental rather than a hotel.
==============

Seven Reasons for Choosing Vacation Rentals Vs Hotels
By Marie R. Ferguson

Why rent a vacation home?

Vacation homes are just that! Homes with plenty of space. It feels familiar with all the essentials of home and more. It's a place to relax, to hang out with your family and friends. They offer more choices than staying at a hotel. Shall we eat in? or go out to eat tonight? Yes, they have it all. Two families staying together can share the cooking, stay up late playing cards while the kids bunk with each other and enjoy the sleep over.

There's plenty of fun things to do. For example, you can hang out and play games all day, watch movies together, sit by the fire, or enjoy their jacuzzi, pool, or sauna. Build a bonfire, dance under the stars and share stories.

Most vacation homes have in house laundry facilities, unlike a hotel. There's the internet and phone service which are always available. You'll have a private yard and/or community, to entertain your family. Cook on the grill and share recipes.

Vacation rentals are typically less expensive than hotel rooms because you can share the fees, but the accommodations can be so much more than a hotel room. Families who share the costs, save money and still have more room to spread out, than if they were to rent a room at a hotel.

And, what about location?

There are homes located right on the water with their own private beach. Or at the foot of the ski mountain with a chair lift just steps away. Most vacation homes are close to amusement parks, and the best entertainment areas. For those special events, look for a home close by, talk to the owner and make an offer if you think the price is too high. Some owners will welcome the opportunity when they have last minute vacancies. These rentals are all over the world, so you are never limited on where to go on vacation. Ask the owner to let you know what's going on in town the week you are booked. They will know the current events for their area and when asked, are usually enthusiastic about sharing it with you. Remember, owners want you to have a great time so you'll want to re-book the following year. And you may even get a better deal on return visits.

Whatever your vacation choice is, staying at a vacation home instead of a hotel, will give you more comfort, more options, more luxury and most of all more privacy to enjoy each other and your friends or family.

And, it's your choice for better accommodations! Still need more reasons to choose DreamAwayRentals.com? Come find out what we are all about!

The European Independent Film Festival, Paris in 2012
By Robert Emdur

As the largest city (and the capital of France), with an intricate tie to Europe's culture, art, history and economy, Paris is the perfect location for the 2012 European Independent Film Festival (ÉCU). Since its beginnings in 2006, the ÉCU has been a bright star on the film festival scene, both in Europe and further afield.

The ÉCU is an annual film festival dedicated to the 'indie' cinema and is quickly being considered as the 'European version of Sundance'. Student tours to Paris that include the three-day event at the end of March and the beginning of April in 2012 will be an extraordinary insight into the world of modern European, independent cinema. The ÉCU itself hosts 12 different categories of films, which work to bring together some of the best independent filmmakers in the world. The categories at the 2012 ÉCU include: European submissions - Dramatic Feature, Dramatic Short, Documentary, Animation, Experimental, Music Video, European Youth Film - and non-European submissions - Dramatic Feature, Dramatic Short, Documentary. As well, there are worldwide (European and Non-European) submissions: Student Film, and ÉCU Firsts.

The festival itself will be held at Les 7 Parnassiens and Cinema Action Christine. Les 7 Parnassiens was the first film house in the Montparnasse area to show films in their original language, and it has seven auditoriums ranging from the intimately sized to the larger, more commercial screening rooms. Student tours should spend some time in Les 7 Parnassiens, but also visit the Cinema Action Christine - a twin art movie theatre that opened in 1972 in the Latin Quarter of the city.

Not only will student tours to the ÉCU enable students to experience some of the best of the independent films being made in Europe, but they will also have the opportunity to be exposed to the various categories of 'foreign' films that allows for entries by non-European filmmakers. There is also a category of 'student films' and participants will be able to receive feedback on some of their works while learning to workshop others'.

One of the most interesting aspects of the ÉCU is the 'Speak to the Directors' panels that are ongoing throughout the event. Here, those on student tours will be able to ask various directors questions regarding their current films, their outlook on independent cinema and where it may be headed in the future. They may even be able to get a bit of information from the director about their upcoming projects.

In addition to this, the ÉCU brings together a host of agents, talent scouts, actors and actresses, directors, production companies and their representatives, distributors, and a variety of the film-loving public. It makes for an interesting atmosphere that is less about the glitz and glamour and more about the quality of the films being made. Student tours to the ÉCU will allow you to be a part of the independent film culture that the festival works to present.
